Why you should consider a UI expert when designing your website

Posted by Danny Bermant - 01 Feb 2011
You know your website is overdue for a redesign. The design looks tired, the fonts are old fashioned, and the images are unsuitable. So you think a new design is going to get punters flocking to your site? Wrong.

When companies decide to have a website redesign, they often view it as a simple equation:

1. Get an eye catching design
2. Pay someone to get more traffic to my website

Result = lots of sales

If you think it’s this simple, you’re in for a big disappointment.

How user friendly is your website?

When you’re having your website designed, have you ever asked yourself the following questions:

  1. What do I want to achieve from my website? Do I want more subscribers? More sales? More enquiries?
  2. Have I set any targets for achieving these goals? E.g. 25% of new business enquiries should come from my website.
  3. How will I measure my goals?
The sad truth is, most website owners I come across don’t have answers to any of the above questions. They know they would like more enquiries through their website but have little idea how to go about it. Few website owners even know how to access their web statistics.

A website is more than just an online brochure, it’s a vital sales tool that works around the clock, advertising your business. If you do the following preparatory work before your website is designed, it will go a long way towards ensuring a successful outcome.

Facebook has stopped supporting IE6, maybe it's time you followed their example?

Posted by Danny Bermant - 07 Sep 2010

Facebook have just announced they are going to stop supporting Internet Explorer 6. What about you? Do you intend to continue supporting it?

IE6 may only have 5% of the market, but a lot of those users are concentrated in the business sector where many corporate IT departments will only support IE6. (the same applies for UK Government departments).

And therein lies a dilemma. Stop supporting IE6 and you lose out on potential business customers. Continue to support IE6 and you may be incurring significant web development costs just to make your website accessible to a small percentage of your users.

How a home page slideshow can improve the conversion rate of your website

As broadband speeds get ever faster, people also expect to find what they are looking for quickly. This not only means having a fast loading website, but it also means your visitors need to find the information they are looking for straight away. Your home page is your "shop window" and you only have a few seconds to convince potential customers before they visit your competitors. Few visitors will bother scrolling below the fold of the page to find out more about you. So how do you sell your business in 15 seconds when all you have is a 1024 x 768 screen?

The answer is a home page slideshow. This displays a sequence of fading images, each of which contains a description. Each slide illustrates a different element of your business and includes a link to the relevant page on your site.
